The Beauty of Relationships April 26, 2008

Relationships put a lot on the table. If handled correctly, it’ll be a wonderful experience. If abused or handled incorrectly, our hearts will experience pain that none of us want to go through. Regardless of the situation, I truly believe the outcome of both can end as a beautiful story.

The desire we have to be loved comes from Christ. We were made in His image. He knows everything we need and His love for us will never come up short in meeting our needs. The only problem is, it’s very easy for us to spend more time with that ’special somebody’ than it is with the Lord. Unfortunately, it happens quite often. I’m no expert in this, but when two people go their separate ways, you can tell how much of their relationship was being led by Christ and how much of it was being led by their emotions.

A person’s true character will be revealed in the aftermath of the relationship, when everything they desired is no longer there. If their character changes, then obviously something was out of line. If it doesn’t, then everything was handeled wisey. So what out of line? Their relationship with Christ.

Desperate people will make desperate decisions. The only thing we should be desperate for is Christ. We are made complete in Him. He will give us the freedom to try and love somebody more than Him, but we won’t get the happily ever after ending that we want. Why will He give us the freedom to try it? Because He’ll let us make a mistake to realize that He will never let us love anybody more than Him.

When a relationships is handled correctly, it can be an amazing experience! Even if it doesn’t work out in the end, both people are still blessed and go their own way with nothing but respect for each other. The fruit that comes from a Christ centered relationship is amazing! The people around us are blessed, were blessed, and we inevitably find ourselves closer to Christ.

When a relationship is handled incorrectly and doesn’t end the way we want it to, our hearts hurt. The pain comes from all of our mixed emotions in trying to figure out what went wrong. Our hearts have to be broken in order for it to be restored by the One who created it. We must realize this! If we don’t, we will make life very difficult when it doesn’t need to be that way. When the person we long to be with is no longer around or no longer wants to be with us, it hurts, a lot! I believe Christ feels the same pain when we choose to spend more time with that special somebody rather then putting Him first. He longs to have an intimate relationship with us. He longs for us to spend time with Him.

I believe being single is great! It’s one of the most beautiful gifts I have. The rest of my life is being shaped during this season. My devotional life, my finances, my attitudes, my education, and the list goes on! I so deeply cherish my relationship with Christ. I have everything I need.

That’s the beauty of relationships. Either way, we eventually end up closer to the One that matters most.

Purity April 21, 2008

I recently heard a pastor say something that really convicted me. When he said it, he was talking about himself, but it still felt like a ton of bricks hit me across the face.

He said, “Im sorry if I’m not caught up with the filth of this world.”

When is it okay for us to justify our purity? As children of God, aren’t we supposed to be so in tune to the spirit that the entertainment of the world shouldnt matter to us? I’m also not going to the extreme by saying all were allowed to do is sit in our room and pray, which isn’t bad, but I think you get my point. We justify purity by fast forwarding through the sex scene of a movie, when in all honestly, we shouldn’t even be watching it. Are we really missing out because we haven’t seen this summers hottest flick? Are we really missing out because we don’t know the top 20 songs Billboard has to offer?

I want to be used by God for great things, which is such a broad statement. Being used by God for great things can be leading the homeless person down the street to Christ, or it can be speaking to thousands. In order for that to happen, my life must be aligned with the Holy Spirit. It must be!

I’m willing to make the small sacrifices now in order to reap the benefits of my God given destiny later…

I just purchased my ticket for DREAM IT.08  which will be in Sacramento, CA this summer. Some of the key note speakers will be Ed Young, Bill Hybels, and Erwin McManus. Some of the musical guests that’ll be there are Delirious? along with my personal favorite, Israel & New Breed! It’s gonna be awesome!

Everything’s been great up here. I wish the sun would come out more! Matt and Joe Episode 5 seemed to be a big hit! A big thanks goes out to everyone who watched it. Whow knows? Maybe we’ll make another one soon. I need to take care of a few things before I go to work so I’ll catch you later. Peace!

This post is from my friend Scotty. I really enjoyed it and I thought you would too…

By and large, our world has lost it’s sense of wonder

Peter Pan\'s expression of wonder My friend Joe and are I reading through The Ragamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning, and this sentence in the opening paragraphs of chapter 5 stated something I have been noticing a lot recently. In our world of knowledge, where we can jump on the internet and find out the reasoning behind almost all of our everyday occurences we have lost our ability to be filled with wonder.

We live in a day and age where the unknown scares us. We feel uneasy when we enter a conversation about things we are not sure about, and when it comes to God, we define and describe, and try to fit Him into the intellectual boxes in our mind, scared to look at God and not know the answers!

Manning writes:

We get so preoccupied with ourselves, the words we speak, the plans and projects we conceive that we become immune to the glory of creation. We barely notice the cloud passing over the moon or the dewdrops clinging to the rose leaves. The ice on the pond comes and goes. the wild blackberries ripen and wither. The blackbird nests outside our bedroom window. We don’t see her. We avoid the cold and the heat. We refrigerate ourselves in the summer and entomb ourselves in plastic in winter. We rake up ever leaf as fast as it falls. We are so accustomed to buying prepackaged meats and fish that we never think and blink about the bounty of God’s creation. We grow complacent and lead practical lives. We miss the experience of awe, reverence, and wonder.

Have you noticed this? As a cloud passes over the moon we barely blink because we know about the rain cycle and the wind blowing the clouds. We get annoyed at the blackbird singing at our window because she’s distracting us from our “peace and quiet” of internet, emails, tv, and text messages. We fail to enjoy the amazing gift of the rain because it softens our gel, or makes the hair we spent hours straightening go frizzy.

I don’t know about you, but I want to be someone who lives everyday in the presence of God. Question: How do we live in the presence of the living God? Answer: In wonder, amazed by the traces of God all around us. This is how we become people who live in an attitude of continual worship. We acknowledge that there is more to God than we can ever understand, and enjoy the mysteries He reveals on a daily basis. I get excited knowing that I will be able to spend every day of eternity finding out something new about God and still never know it all! What a joy! What peace I have as I rest in the ineffible!

The last two days have been pretty crazy and I’m exhausted. Last night my roommate Josh was rushed to the Hospital and they had to perform exploratory surgery on him. I drove to the hospital after work so I could be there for him and his family and we were there until two am. It turned out he had a pretty bad stomach problem, which he’s been telling me for a while now, he just wasn’t sure if he was right or not. The good thing is that the surgery went great and he is doing just fine. He should be in the hospital for the next five to seven days. In the mean time, I gotta start packing up his stuff. He’s decided that once he’s out of the hospital he’ll be moving back with his Mom, and his family would like to have all off his stuff situated for him back at the house before he moves in. This whole semester has been very unique. This is the third time the Lord’s thrown me a curve ball. It’s definately been a crazy ride!

March Madness is coming to an end tonight and I hope Kansas get’s dominated! I’m so frustrated they beat UNC! Anyway, all is well. I wish the rain would go away but something tells me that’s not going to happen anytime soon. As far as my roommate situation goes, I don’t really have one right now. Josh is really sick and got permission to live with his Mother for the rest of the semester. He’s not completely moved out, but as of right now, he’s coming and going as he pleases. I know what you’re thinking and yes it’s true, as of right now I am living in the quad (a room that fits 3 people) all by myself.  How sweet it is…

I’m gonna go make some dinner and watch some of the NCAA Finals before I head off to work. With that being said, I leave you with this…
